Yes! It is "that" time of year, again..... Tarantula Season! We have started spotting tarantula's everywhere. The kids love spotting the tarantula's. Olivia is especially fascinated by them... we try to keep her away from them because she can be a little "squishy" with them and we don't want her to try to squish one of these beauties.
Here are some interesting facts for those of you who are not very familiar with these beautiful creatures:
1. Tarantulas can live 30 years or more!
2. Tarantulas are very docile and RAREL bite people! If one ever did bite you (which, they give fair warning so that you have plenty of time to gently put them down if they ever raise their front fangs ) their bite is no worse than a bee sting.
3. Tarantula's have retractable claws on each leg, like a cat!
4. And here is a really cool fact about tarantula's... tarantula's can regenerate lost legs. Tarantula's molt throughout their lives, replacing exoskeleton as they grow. So they can repair any damage to their body- so if they lost a leg, the next time they molt, a new one appears- like magic!!- and..... tarantula's will eat their lost leg (to recycle the protein)... yummy!!
So, those are a few cool facts about the tarantula.... pretty neat, eh? We are learning to like these spiders more and more each year!
